Session10 : reflection

We have tried out some grammar checking tools online such as Grammarly and Gingersoftware in this session. It is useful in detecting trivial grammatical mistakes. The explanation provided by Ginger makes it suitable for students to correct their own works and learn the correct grammar usage.

However, when it comes to mistakes that relates to the contextual meaning of the text, the tool may not work properly. For example, I tried to type 'You is the goodest.' as a test, expecting it to be changed as “You are the best”. However, “Yours is the best.” was what I get, which was out of my expectation. Although the sentence corrected is grammatically correct, the meaning is totally different. It is true that the online tool may be helpful in grammar checking sometimes, but there are always occasions that we need to think about the context before we change the sentence. Teacher is still indispensable in any cases.

The other website that I have tried out is Mystorybook. It is such an enjoyable experience to create my own first story book using Mystorybook! All I need to do is to select my own set of pictures and write words or narrations. There are also plenty of built-in characters, items and scenes available for me to add to enrich my story book. I can even draw directly on it! It is easy to use and looks great. I’m sure my students will love to construct their own stories like I do. It will surely be a great chance for them to make good use of their creativity and imagination to write. Definitely going to give them a try some time soon!
